FISHERMAN’S BREAKFAST 2.0

26. February 2024, 14:0015:00

Potential for regional crab value creation

Moderation: Alexander Wever, Founder and Owner, AWF Consulting

Brown shrimp (Crangon crangon) are caught and consumed here, but not de-shelled to add value. At the Thünen Institute of Sea Fisheries, we are researching whether and how mechanical shrimp shelling and thus value creation in the fishing region could work on the basis of contactless technology (see also stands 5F25 and 5H20). In addition to the technical feasibility, we are also investigating the economic feasibility of this “Crab Pulping 3.0”. We are also looking at whether and how machine-pulled crabs could be marketed more profitably in the region and how the resulting shell waste can be utilized sustainably. In our lecture, I will present and discuss the initial results of our project.
