LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT – A VALUABLE TOOL FOR AQUACULTURE

26. February, 16:5017:10

Moderation: Fabian Schäfer, Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB)

Sustainability analysis has been an important aspect in many industries for years, both for internal company development and for demonstrating sustainable business practices to the outside world. A Life Cycle Assessment offers the possibility to evaluate all types of aquaculture systems and species in order to determine the environmental impact of the respective production or product. This presentation will give a brief overview of the benefits of life cycle analysis using a trout farm as an example.

Dr. Christian Sahlmann, Manager Certification Aquaculture, Ecocert Swiss AG

Christian Sahlmann studied marine biology in Bremen. For his thesis, he spent almost a year every month on the North Sea with the research cutter ‘Uthörn’. During his studies, he realized that he was interested in nutrition and sustainability. After graduating, Christian moved to Norway for his doctoral thesis, where he spent ten years researching salmon feed. Now he can combine his research experience with his practical experience at various aquaculture facilities as a certifier and program manager at Ecocert Swiss AG.
