THE ASC FEED STANDARD – SOLUTIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE FISH FARMING

26. February 2024, 16:3016:50

Moderation: Fabian Schäfer, Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB)

Long and complex supply chains for animal feed make it difficult to trace and check.
At the same time, up to 80% of aquaculture’s carbon footprint is generated at the primary commodity level through agricultural practices, and new regulations such as the EUDR require companies to demonstrate deforestation-free supply chains.

With our ASC feed standard, we tackle the effects of aquaculture at source. For example, the issue of illegal and legal deforestation and land conversion is taken into account for each crop with a code of conduct for suppliers that applies up to level 2 of the supply chain.

Tobias Haug, Market Development Manager, Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC)

Tobias Haug, born in Swabia and a Berliner by choice, has been Market Development Manager for Germany, Austria and Switzerland at ASC since September 2023. Although his biology degree in Tübingen specialized in genetics, his passion for food led him to a subsequent Master’s degree in Agribusiness at Hohenheim. Before joining the ASC, he gained a lot of experience in aquaculture, both in biotechnology and as the founder of an aquaponics farm and in the sale of AI solutions for farm management.

Convinced that responsible food production holds the greatest potential in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss and wanting to promote this issue for his two children in particular, his move into the fish industry was only a matter of time.

Fabian Schäfer, Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB)

Fabian has been working as a postdoc at the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) at the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. since 2016.
Its main task is to communicate scientifically sound information on aquaculture to consumers, the media, politicians, NGOs and other stakeholders via an online platform (www.aquakulturinfo.de) and other means of scientific communication.
